The Importance of Water

Posted on Jun 3, 2011 at 8:20 AM

 Monica Cox, Indoor Horticulture Intern

Water is a translucent liquid, yet a stone solid concept at Reiman Gardens. I have learned you would get nowhere as a horticulturist without a little H2O lending its hand. Every morning the indoor horticulture gals and I will water the Conservatory, Greenhouse, and my personal favorite the Butterfly Wing! As well as the odds and ends on the property, such as the main entrance, hallway, Mahlstede Building, offices, etc. Even on cloudy days, some plants need that water! Even with all this water around me though, I feel that I have only just gotten my feet wet.

The Gardens has offered so much to the interns this summer, and I have a feeling it’s only going to get better. Our field trip to the Iowa Arboretum was eye opening and a grand comparison in feeling to the Gardens. The Zen-like aura of the Iowa Arboretum almost counter-acted the education based and fast pace of Reiman Gardens. I’ve noticed that no plant stays the same day to day. Everything changes and every day brings a new adventure!

The Campanile Garden at Reiman Gardens

Posted on Jun 1, 2011 at 1:26 PM

Nicole Soderquist, Outdoor Horticulture Intern

The Campanile Garden this year at Reiman Gardens focuses on the World Wide Web. The garden goes along with the theme for the year, “Insects!” The Campanile Garden is not only designed to look like a web with black pearl peppers (Capsicum annuum ‘Black Pearl’) creating the lines of the web, but it is a place where you can learn how insects themselves communicate in their own sometimes very different ways. Placed near the Campanile Garden you can find one of ten of David Rogers’ larger than life wooden insect sculptures, an enormous spider and web suspended within the trees.
