The "Monster" of the Butterfly Wing

There is a moth, if you’re lucky enough to visit on a day it has recently emerged, that is wreaking havoc on the Butterfly Wing here at Reiman Gardens. Only kidding! A few weeks into my Entomology internship at Reiman Gardens it is very clear to see that visitors are both amused and frightened of the sight of the African Moon Moth (Argema mimosae). These moths have a somewhat eerie look to them, which tends to turn off some little ones and even some of our older guests. But, never fear; these moths are harmless. They don’t even have mouth parts! So, as unusual as these moths look with their large bodies and ornate wings, there is no need to fear!

During my docent shifts while these moths are viewable in the Wing, it is always great to see guest’s reactions to them hanging around on the net! I’ve seen everything from running away, taking a magnifying glass to get a better look, and people asking me if it is fake. These are extraordinary moths, and I hope everyone keeps their eyes peeled for the African Moon Moth while they visit.
