En plein air is a French term referring to the act of painting “in the open air.” Join local artist, educator, and gallerist, Kaukab Merchant for an oil painting class outdoors and on location at Reiman Gardens. Learn this unique process and various techniques to paint the garden landscape with natural light and bright, defining color.
All supplies can be purchased from The University Bookstore. *See supply list.* Please bring all required items to the first class.
A class exhibition will be held on Sunday, September 9.
$60 for CoHorts members. $75 for the general public. Iowa State University Students pay 15% off the member price.
Required Items for Painting:
Outdoor Easel
(4 minimum) Canvas or boards (prepared)
Oil paints (Titanium White, 2 Yellows, 2 Blues, 2 Reds)
Brushes
Palette (paper palettes work well, with a large rubber band to keep in place)
Palette knives
Medium (linseed oil or other)
Thinner (Gamsol or turpentine)
Container with lid for medium/thinner
Container with mild soap and water for washing brushes
Rags and/or paper towels
Plastic bag for trash
Backpack or box to keep materials in
Personal Items:
Sunscreen
Hat
Drinking water
Neutral-colored clothing (not white or bright colors, which can reflect onto your
painting surface)
Food or snack
Optional:
Insect repellent
Gloves
Light jacket
Fold-up stool/chair
Camera for reference photos/tracking progress
Easel umbrella
